Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. – 2 Timothy 4:2

Sometimes we might be tempted to think words don’t matter. What effect do they have on anything or anyone? But they do matter. The assassination of Charlie Kirk is evidence that words very much matter.

It was the power of the spoken word, words of truth, powerful words that were irrefutable that led to the events of September 10th, 2025. It was the persistent enduring words of truth spoken by one brave man that so frustrated and threatened evil, demonic, vicious people that they could stand the words no more.

Maybe it was a powerful word like, “Immigration without assimilation is invasion” that led to Charlie’s assassin’s bullet. Maybe it was his sardonic, “We have to tell our babies to stop crying” that poked some wokester over the edge. Charlie believed and lived, “If you believe in something, you need to have the courage to fight for those ideas – not run away from them or silence them.” Charlie was the embodiment of that.

College campuses certainly weren’t happy when Charlie insightfully pointed out, “One of the most horrifying and surprising evolutions we have witnessed among our widespread campus network is the rapid movement away from tolerating opposing ideas and respectful debate to the deployment of obscene bully tactics from the left.” Those words proved prophetic. He said, “The truth is that while those on the left – particularly the far left – claim to be tolerant and welcoming of diversity, in reality many are quite intolerant of anyone not embracing their radical views.” More truth. Words are powerful. Words matter.

So they, the opposition in its various forms, attempted to shut down those words and many others like them. They tried interruptions and disruptions. Finally, they resorted to a bullet. But they failed. Charlie is gone, but his spirit will live on. His words will live on. Charlie’s words mattered. The assassin’s bullet doesn’t prove Charlie Kirk’s words were weak or wrong, but just the opposite. If they were weak or wrong they wouldn’t have mattered.

Charlie Kirk built Turning Point USA by voicing words that mattered. He became the embodiment and example of being Christian salt and light even in the political arena. He showed no area or topic is off limits for the godly. President Trump rightly assessed of Charlie, “No one understood or had the heart of the youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me.” That was a good thing, a very good thing for our nation and young people. Charlie took words that mattered and patriotically helped to push this nation to be great again. He did all of this with simple yet profound words, words that mattered.

Charlie’s words were strong and right and they are true. His words had a powerful effect. They will become more powerful over time. Charlie’s words cut through the veil of lies and fog of confusion. Reason, realities, and absolute truth are powerful when set to words. This is especially true when they are based on the word of God, spoken in love, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Charlie Kirk believed the Bible was “divinely inspired, historically robust, and profoundly true.” He attended a church affiliated with the Calvary Chapel Association known for its strong and consistent reliance on the word of God. Charlie’s words were largely based on and laced with, the word of God. He was taught well. He learned well. So his words mattered.

Charlie Kirk was a believer in Jesus. He had a strong faith. He said, “Jesus is enough, you are not enough.” He was very vocal testifying that, “Jesus saved my life.” Because of Jesus Charlie didn’t fear death. He said, “All death can do to the believer is deliver them to Jesus.” Thanks for those comforting words Charlie, they matter to those who grieve your loss.

But bad words, evil words, threatening words, vicious words matter too. For years the Democratic Left contingent of our nation has been using accusatory words like “Nazi,” “Facist,” “racist,”“haters,” and worse to dehumanize their opposition. That’s simply the truth. It was only a matter of time before some lunatic or faction not only attempted an assassination, but succeeded in their effort.

We don’t know at this point who the assassin or assassins were. Left wing, Democrat, government elitist, gender confused, CCP supported, drug cartel backed, we just don’t know. We know, despite the stupid numbskull comment of a liberal media commentator that it wasn’t a Trump supporter accidentally hitting Charlie as they celebrated by shooting off their weapon. And you can’t lay blame to someone like Charlie himself who simply, calmly, courageously, in love spoke truth in the lion’s dens of our college campuses. Yes, even evil words matter, they incited a brave man’s assassination.

But if you take anything out of this heartbreaking event it should be that words do matter. Charlie’s prophetic voice and the words of truth and reason he proclaimed were powerful and having a devastating effect on the weak woke opposition. The weak wokesters had no viable response or counter arguments. All they could come up with were shouts, threats, an empty shallow “Oh yeah?!” Charlie’s words shut their mouths. Eventually the words of truth and reason became so threatening to their nonsense, so defeating to their hysteria, so refuting to their confused, deceptive lies, that in frustration they resorted to a bullet. One bullet they thought, would silence these words. They couldn’t have been more wrong.

Sometimes in order for something to blossom bigger, it must die. Jesus said:

John 12:24-25 (NKJV) – Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.

Jesus and His gospel message needed to pass through the planting of death and blossoming of resurrection. Jesus through death and resurrection has impacted the world like no other in history. This was God’s wisdom. This was God’s reality as He knew the fallen nature of humanity. And this is often the path Jesus calls His followers to.

John 12:25-26 (NKJV) – He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

Jesus’ words were empowered by His death, and resurrection. His follower’s echoed words will be empowered by their willingness to sacrifice, die, and pass the baton of meaningful words forward. Words gain power, and momentum, the more they are passed forward.

But don’t be mistaken, the words I am speaking about are not mere human concocted words. There have been influential words spoken by communists, leftists, irrationalists, people who refuse to heed the reality of history. Even lies can be powerful words until destroyed by the truth. No, the most powerful and enduring words are divinely authored:

Hebrews 4:12-13 (NKJV) 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Words are powerful when spoken. We are exhorted in scripture to:

2 Timothy 4:2 (NKJV) – Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

Certainly Charlie Kirk lived out this verse. But we are learning also:

2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NKJV) – For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

Yes, people willfully ignore the truth that makes them feel uncomfortable. Guilty people choose to hide and excuse their sins in fables. Nevertheless, we need to, “be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Timothy 4:5). Keep sharing those meaningful words.

Words are powerful when written. “The pen is mightier than the sword” it has been said. God’s words are the most powerful, the most invincible. And when those words are coupled with the power of the Spirit, not even a bullet can stop them. The empowering presence of the Holy Spirit is what Jesus promised His followers:

Matthew 10:19-20 (NKJV) – 19 But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

Don’t let an assassin’s bullet or future bullets shut you up. God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but a spirit of power, love, and an orderly reasoning argument refuting mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Cowardice is frozenness, stillness, inaction in the face of fear. Courage is faith that moves you forward even when you are fearful.

Charlie Kirk was a man of courage. He was a smart, intelligent, self taught, Spirit taught and Spirit empowered man. He may have been concerned, even feared at times for his wife, children, loved ones, but he kept moving forward. He very well knew there are “crazies” in this world. But he kept speaking those powerful words, fearlessly. And those powerful words were having an effect. The opposition’s response is evidence of that.

Now, with Charlie’s passing, we will see God’s principle of death and resurrection furthered in the proliferation and perpetuation of more of those powerful words. Now we take the baton Charlie has passed forward. Charlie’s words of patriotism are powerful. But his seeds of the gospel and testimony of eternal life are most powerful. Charlie’s words went beyond the here and now and pointed people to consider their later and up there. Charlie had a Savior, the Savior, Jesus, firmly planted in his heart. “All death can do to the believer is deliver them to Jesus.” That is the greatest message.

Words related to Jesus are the most powerful words. The words of Jesus are the words that will change this nation. Charlie knew that. He lived those powerful words, and he was willing to die for them, and he did.

Words are powerful. They are more powerful than steel, they make technology worthwhile. Words give life meaning, value, direction.  There’s a reason Jesus is “the Word made flesh” (John 1:14). Words are given power as they are lived out in life. Jesus said:

John 13:15 (NKJV) – 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

Charlie’s words were powerful, because he backed them up with his life. Now it’s our turn. This truly is a turning point. Will we pull our head into our shell like a tortoise? Will we stick our head into the ground like an ostrich? Will we shut up or step up? Will we roar like a lion and whistle the flock together like a shepherd. Words are powerful, when spoken. Speak up! Write up! Because words matter.
